Dr. Noralean Williams Obituary

Dr. Noralean Williams, M.D., Fayetteville, North Carolina's first black female physician in private practice with admitting privileges to the hospitals, was born in Shreveport, Louisiana to Willie Mae and LB Jeter.  She was baptized a Christian at the age of 12 and Noralean always maintained a quiet reverence for God and his son Jesus. The family, which included her younger sister Clara, later moved to Houston, Texas where Noralean was valedictorian at Booker T. Washington High School in 1962.

After receiving a full four year scholarship to Howard University in Washington DC she earned a bachelor of science in zoology, pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (1964) and was a member of the Arnold Air Society. She went on to Howard University's Medical School, graduating in 1970. An internship and residency in Internal Medicine followed at Freedmen's Hospital from 1971-1974.

In 1975, she and her husband, Dr. Jesse F. Williams, her medical school classmate, moved to Fayetteville, NC. She started a private practice and her husband assumed the Directorship of the Cumberland County Health Department. Dr Noralean Williams was a member of both Cape Fear Valley and Highsmith Rainey medical staff and practiced general internal medicine for the next 35 years, retiring in 2010.

She was active in the Old North State Medical Society, the National Medical Association and maintained her North Carolina medical board license until her death. She enjoyed reading science fiction and mystery novels, shopping at thrift stores and collecting Corningware.
